Burger with a cherry on top!

Burger with a cherry on top!

Burgers can now be found on the dessert menu! A new ‘Sweet Burger’ crammed with layers of cookies, cake, confectionary and cream has been added to the specials board at Zaks -  thanks to the inspired design of 12-year-old Emily Parsons from Thorpe End in Norwich.

Emily was one of over 1,000 people to enter a competition to create a new burger for Zaks by drawing a design, listing ingredients and deciding on a name.

The 12-year-old, who attends Norwich High School for Girls, chose to ditch the savoury meat and cheese in favour of far sweeter flavours and her design was chosen as the overall winner across all three Zaks restaurants in Norwich.

In her winning formula, appropriately entitled the ‘Sweet Burger’, Emily swapped the beef burger for cake, the bun for cookies, waffles for cheese, ice cream in place of lettuce and topped it off with marshmallows instead of tomatoes, strawberry laces instead of onions and chocolate and maple syrup instead of ketchup and mustard. Along with a few extra special touches including cream and a cherry on top.

Chris Carr, divisional manager of restaurants for Blue Sky Leisure who own Zaks, said: “We received some fantastic entries but Emily’s inspired design stood out as it was imaginative, innovative and most importantly looked delicious!”

As part of her prize Emily won a free meal for her and her family at Zaks Mousehold Diner where she tasted her design which has been carefully created by the Zaks team and added to the specials board as an eye-catching and mouth-watering sharing dessert.

“When Emily found out she had won she was jumping up and down she was so ecstatic,” said her mum, Claire Parsons. “She was so excited about coming to see her burger made up and to taste it. We are a sweet-toothed family of chocoholics so it wasn’t a surprise that Emily created this design, and it wasn’t hard to find other family members to come and try it with us we even had to draw lots!”

Emily and Claire, along with Emily’s Nan, Granddad and Uncle Derek, all dived into the Sweet Burger with relish. On finally tasting her design Emily described it as “tasting even better than I expected and even better than my drawing.” She has now laid down the gauntlet to all her friends to see if anyone can manage to finish the whole dish by themselves.

Emily’s Sweet Burger will remain on the specials board at all three Zaks restaurants for the rest of February.

Those without such a sweet tooth can try out some of the other winning designs from the competition.  Nine-year-old Jenny from Framingham Earl was chosen as the winner at Zaks Poringland Diner and her ‘Brunchie Burger’ complete with sausage, fried egg, grilled tomatoes, and bacon will be on the specials board at this restaurant.

Eight year old Ella from Buckenham in Norwich was chosen as the winner at Zaks Waterside Grill and Bar with her design of a ‘Sweet Filly Chilly burger’ - a double-decker burger with sweet chilli sauce, a layer of ‘Philly’ cheese and nachos - will be on the specials board at the diner in Barrack Street.

Chris Carr added: “Owing to the quality and popularity of all the winning designs I think they will all be making regular appearances on the specials boards throughout the year.  Emily’s Sweet Burger may even evolve into a permanent menu item.”
