Tribe account manager Dawn Humphreys and account executive Leila Lahfa took to the stage at the University of East Anglia (UEA) to give undergraduates advice on how to get into the PR industry.
The pair spoke about how their previous skills and experience helped them get into the industry, what it’s like to work in an agency, and the value of PR.
Their 20-minute presentation was part of the UEA Careers in Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations event on January 27.
Dawn, an ex Archant journalist, explained how coming from a media background gave her an insight into how journalists work, and the benefits of transferable skills. Leila explained how, after graduating, she gained valuable work experience and got a foot in the PR industry’s door.
Other speakers included Paul Burns, formerly of advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi, Philip Preston, regional director of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Charlotte Stratta, publications officer of Norwich City Council and business manager for East Publishing, and Simon Middleton, Brand Strategy Guru and author of Build A Brand In Thirty Days.
After the presentations, the students were given the opportunity to mingle with the industry representatives and ask questions.
Lindsey Roffe, Tribe’s head of development, said: “We consider it to be an extremely important duty to attract new talent into the PR industry.
“Graduates and undergraduates can bring a level of objectivity to our business which we have found to be invaluable in the past. Communicating to students at events like the UEA career event helps to give students an insight into the industry and can help them to decide whether it is the right career path for them.”
