Challenge:
Tribe was appointed to help the company shake off the misconception that it was simply a Norfolk based construction firm.
As a rapidly growing business, managing multi-million pound contracts in high-risk sectors, May Gurney also needed additional support to respond to an increasing amount of media enquiries and to ensure its reputation remained in safe hands.
Solution:
Tribe was retained for seven years operating as an extension to the in-house team and worked alongside May Gurney’s head of communications and divisional MDs to develop the corporate communications strategy. PR plans were also delivered for each business division, giving senior managers their own dedicated PR resource and a greater share of voice as industry experts.
May Gurney’s corporate key messages were cascaded through all activity and communicated via regional, national, trade media and at industry events, positioning the organisation as a growing company, working in long-term partnerships with its customers, offering a great place to work and having environmental and safety concerns at its heart.
To reduce pressure on the in-house team, Tribe provided a 24/7 press office, providing senior counsel for crisis situations, issues management and responding to journalist enquiries. And to ensure directors were prepared for media interest in difficult times, scenario planning and media training were also arranged, equipping spokespeople with the skills and confidence to protect May Gurney’s reputation.
Results:
Tribe generated regular ongoing media coverage in key trade and regional media, resulting in media exposure worth £1,172,970.76in 2009 alone, giving a ROI ratio of 17:1. Non financial returns included building beneficial relationships with the media such as the MJ, Surveyor, Construction News, MRW, New Civil Engineer and letsrecycle.com as well as news and business media throughout the UK via contribution to features, providing expert opinion, arranging site visits, journalist meetings and offering a professional press office service.
“Tribe is always ready for a challenge no matter how big or small and everything is always done in a professional yet friendly way. They have provided excellent reactive press office support to our in-house team, as well as delivering proactive PR plans. And importantly, help us prove the value of PR to our senior management team.”
